Sailor Andy : "I tattoo rock stars now!"

Intervista ad Andy Sailor, tatuatore finlandese - from Hell...sinki - che qualche mese fà ha avuto il piacere di tatuare some guy from HIM. Noi del The Heartagram Path ci siamo messi in contatto con lui per fargli qualche domanda che abbiamo poi raccolto in questa intervista.

The Heartagram Path: Prima di tutto, grazie per il tempo e per la disponibilità nel rispondere alle nostre domande. Scavando pù a fondo nella tua storia di tatuatore, cominciamo dal principio: come hai iniziato a tatuare?

Sailor Andy: Ho cominciato a tatuare a scuola nel '93, quando avevo 17 anni. Non ero molto bravo e fortnatamente non ho fatto molti tattoos prima che mi trasferissi per frequentare il college. Diciamo che ho smesso di tatuare principalmente a causa di quella scuola, che durò tre anni, e poi andai al militare. In seguito, frequentai un'altra scuola e poi ho affittato un appartamento con la mia fidanzata. Portai con me l'attrezzatura per tatuare, così di tanto in tanto tauavo me stesso, in particolare perchè sono un idiota, presumo. Nel 2002 cominciai a tatuare di nuovo altre persone, per poi realizzare tatuare era davvero  il sogno della mia vita. Disegnare e progettare siti web, per il quale stavo studiando, non era davvero interessante. Ottenni un posto al Leagcy Tattoo e cominciai a lavorarci nel 2003. Non ho più realizzato nulla che abbia a che fare con i siti web da quel giorno, fortunatamente.

THP: Come si può vedere sul tuo myspace, sembra che tu sia più portato per i traditionals, ai quali alterni anche qualche black and gray e soggetti sacri.

SA: Si, mi piacciono molto i tattoos tradizionali, perchè un buon traditional è una così bella cosa da guardare. E' quello l'aspetto che i tattoos dovrebbero avere. C'è una sorta di magia in loto, non riesco a spiegarlo bene. Comunque, quando lavoro non cerco mai di realizzare un diegno che sia l'emblema del tradizionale, perchè uso più colori e di solito i miei disegni sono piùcomplicati rispetto allo stile tradizionale. Ad ogni modo modo, ultimamente cerco di disegnare soggetti più semplici, ma spesso mi lascio trasportare dalla colorazione, eccedendo un pò. In Finlandia, devi essere in grado di poter fare un pò di tutto, perchè è davvero un paese piccolo, nessuno può vivere specializzandosi solo in uno stile. Oltretutto, non diventa tutto monotono quando provi a mischiare diversi stili.

THP: Parlando di influenze, oggigiorno la TV è piena di shows come Miami Ink e LA Ink: pensi che aiutino le persone ad apprezzare di più il mondo dei tatuaggi?

SA: Credo che programmi TV del genere facciano si che le persone pensino che vada bene farsi dei tattoo grandi, importanti, e ovviamente adesso sanno anche come dovrebbe essere fatto un tattoo per esser considerato buono. Però, a causa di questi programmi, le persone credono che farsi tatuare non sia doloroso, perchè in TV non sembra che ci vogliono ore e ore di sedute e tanto dolore per farsi tatuare grandi soggetti. La parte più brutta di questi shows è che le persone hanno cominciato a dare spiegazioni su spiegazioni riguardo a quello che il tattoo simboleggia per loro e roba del genere. Ma ai tatuatori non interessa questa roba. Quantomeno a me no.

THP: Tornando alla tua carriera, come sei arrivato al Legacy Tattoo? Nel vostro sito c'è scritto che lo studio è stato fondato nel 2000 e che tu sei subentrato come co - proprietario nel 2003...

SA: Beh, fondamentalmente è così che è successo. Kristian Liljelund aprì il negozio e nel 2003 andai da lui con alcune foto dei miei lavori, andammo subito d'accordo e poi vide che ero davvero interessato a tatuare. Lavorai lì per sei mesi e dopo aver visto che stavo in negozio anche dodici ore al giorno, anche senza avere clienti, Kristian pensò che ero davvero serio ed intenzionato a diventare un tatuatore, così mi offri di essere il suo partner in affari.

THP: Riguardo al nome? C'è una spiegazione particolare?

SA: Beh, è diverso, e ci piace mantener viva l'eredità delle tradizioni del tattoo classico. Non saprei comunque, il nome venne deciso prima che io ne entrassi a far parte...

THP: Concentrandoci sui tattooos...quale'è il più strano che tu abbia mai fatto? Qualcosa di davvero particolare che non avresti mai pensato di fare; per esempio nella tua gallery c'è la foto di una sega elettrica, un soggetto abbastanza strano da tatuare.

SA: E' sempre una domanda difficile alla quale rispondere. Quel che è strano per me, potrebbe non esserlo per qualcun altro. La sedia elettrica che ho realizzato, l'ho fatta sul mio migliore amico, il quale è un falegname, quindi non è così strano che se ne sia voluta tatuate una, no? Ho anche fatto la silhoutte di un "uomo" (come quelli delle porte delle toilette pubbliche) che stava facendo diarrea sulla schiena di un ragazzo. Interamente sulla schiena, credo sia questa la cosa più stupida che ho fatto finora.

THP: Più bizzatto della moto sega è un tattoo che hai fattoo to some guy from HIM. Forse è tanto bizzatto quanto il suo proprietario e non è un segreto chi sia, quindi...potresti dirci qualcosa riguardo quel giorno? Sec'è un significato aprticolare del quale vuoi e puoi parlare.

SA: Beh, facciamo walk in tattoo il venerdi, dove non c'è bisogno che tu prenda appuntamento. Questo ragazzo, non conosco nemmeno il suo nome, degli HIM entra e vuole un tattoo. Capitò che ci fossi io al bancone, così dissi solo "Certo, cosa vuoi?" E mi mostrò un disegno a matita che fece uno dei suoi amici. Gli chiesi se voleva che lo ridisegnassi e lui disse che potevo farci quello che volevo. Così gli suggerì di lasciarlo come era, una linea nera spessa senza un particolare stile. Sembra stupido come disegno ed è proprio il perchè sembri così cool, capisci? Il tatuaggio è stato fatto in circa dieci minuti e tutti furono entusiasti del risultato! Era un bravo ragazzo e sarebbe bello tatuarlo ancora. Non s'è comportato come una rock star o cose del genere...

THP: Gli HIM sono forse la rock band finlandese più famosa a livello mondiale e i fans di tutto il mondo hanno, in media, hanno un tatuaggio che riguarid gli HIM. Hai mai tatuato qualche Heartagrams ad esempio o qualcosa che riguardasse gli HIM?

SA: Si, certamente, ho fatto degli Heartagrams, ma nemmeno così tanti, forse 10-15 in sei anni. La maggior parte su ragazze italiane e tedesche.

THP: Cosa pensi al riguarod dei tattoos musicali tributari? Ne hai qualcuno? O hai intenzione di fartene qualcuno?

SA:Un sacco di persone se li fanno, ma io non ne ho. Non ne ho mai fatto nessuno perchè non ho mai ascoltato una band così tanto e per tanto tempo da volerne uno. Quindi credo che lo rimpiangerei dopo un pò, al cambiare delle mie preferenze musicali. Se dovessi farne uno, penso che probabilmente sarebbe uno degli AC/DC o qualcosa che comunque non cambierebbe mai.

THP:  E' l'ultima domanda. Considerand che siamo un sito sugli HIM e che la musica ha un significato molto profonfo nella nostra vita, che rapporto hai tu con la musica?

SA: Amo la musica e l'ascolto tutto il giorno, al lavoro, ma non ho ancora trovato quella band così importante da tatuari il suo logo. La musica è senza dubbio un'importante parte della mia vita! Abbiamo anche un CD degli HIM in studio, ma preferisco le cover degli HIM di Jussi Syren.

THP: Beh, nient'altro da aggiungere se non che ringraziarti per il tuo tempo e per aver risposto alle nostre domande. Quindi, ci vedremo a Dicembre...stiamo pensando di farci un tattoo durante il periodo dell'Helldone :)

Interview to Andy Sailor, Finnish tattoo artist who - from Hell...sinki - some months ago had the pleasure to tattoo some guy from HIM. All of us of The Heartagram Path got in contact with him to chat a little.

The Heartagram Path: First of all, thanks for your time and for answering to our questions. Going deeper into your personal story, let's start from basic: how did you start tattooing?

Sailor Andy: I' ve started tattooing at home in '93, when I was 17. I was really bad and fortunately I didn´t make too many tattoos before I moved out and started college. Basically, I quit tattooing because of that school, which lasted 3 years, and then I was in the army for a while. Then I went to another school and rented an appartment together with my girlfriend. I did bring the tattoo equipment and every now and then I would tattoo myself, mainly because I´m an idiot, I guess.
In 2002 I started tattooing other people again, and I realized that it was my true passion in life. Designing and codeing websites and multimedia stuff, for which I was getting an education, was not that interesting. I got a place at Legacy Tattoo and started working there in 2003. I haven´t done anything website-related since that day, lucky me!

THP: As seen on your myspace, it seems that your're more into traditional tattooing, mixing it with some black and gray and holy subjects.

SA: Yes, I really like traditional tattooing, because a good traditional tattoo is such a beautiful thing to look at. It looks like tattoos are supposed to look like. There is some kind of magic in them, I can´t really put my finger on what it is. However, when I work I don´t try to do super traditonal looking stuff, I use more colors and usually my designs are more complicated than the traditional style. I have, however, tried to draw simpler stuff lately, but I often get carried away with the coloring. In Finland, you really have to be able to do a little bit of everything, because it's such a small place, no-one can live on doing just one style. But on the other hand, it doesn´t get boring when you mix things up a little.

THP: Talking about influences, nowadays TV is plenty of shows such as Miami Ink and LA Ink: do you think they help people looking at tattoo in a better way?

SA: I think the TV-shows make people think that it´s ok to get bigger pieces, and of course now they know what a good tattoo should be like. Also, because of the TV-shows people think that getting tattooed doesn´t hurt, because it doesn´t look like it takes many hours and lots of pain to get a big piece done. The bad thing about the shows is that people have started to bring in lots of explanations and stories about what the hell the tattoo they want symbolizes to them and so on. But tattooers don´t really care about that sentimental crap. At least I don´t.

THP: Back to your tattoo career, how did you get the chance to enter Legacy Tattoo? On your website it's written that tahe shop's been established back in 2000 and then that you've joined ownership in 2003...

SA: Well, that´s basically how it happened. Kristian Liljelund opened the shop, and in 2003 I went to him with some photos of my work and we got along well and he saw that I was really into tattooing. I worked there for 6 months and after seeing me sit around for 12 hours a day or even more, without even having any customers, Kristian thought that I had was serious about becoming a tattooer, so he offered me partnership.

THP: What about the name? Is there a particular reason for it?

SA: Well, it´s different, and we like to keep the legacy of classic tattoing traditions alive. I don´t know, the name was around before I joined...

THP: Let's focus on tattooing...what's the strangest tattoo you've ever done? Something really bizzare that you'd never thought about; for example on your gallery there's the picture of a chainsaw, quiet a strange subject to do.

SA: This is always a hard question to answer. What´s strange to me might be not be strange to someone else. The chainsaw I did is on one of my best friend, and he is a lumberman, so it´s not really that strange that he would get one, is it? I also did a silhouette of a "man" ( like the man on the door of a public toilet) shitting diarrhea on one guy´s back. A full backpiece, that would have to be the stupidest thing I´ve done so far.

THP: And more bizarre than the chainsaw it's a tattoo you've done to 'some guys from HIM'. Maybe it's as bizarre as its owner and it's not a secret who he is, so...could tell us something about that day? If there's a meaning behind it and you can and want to talk about it.

SA: Well, we do drop-in tattoos on Fridays, i.e. you don´t have to make an appointment. This guy, I don´t even know his name, from HIM walks in and wants a tattoo. I happened to be at the counter, so I just said:"Sure, whatta you want?" And he showed me a pencil drawing that some of his friend had done. I asked him if he wanted me to redraw it or something, and he said that I coud do whatever I wanted to do with it. So I suggested that we would just do it exactly like it was, a thick black line and no finesse whatsoever. It looks really stupid and that´s why it´s so cool, you know? The tattoing was done in about 10 minutes and everyone was happy with the result! He was a nice guy and it would be cool to tattoo him again. He didn´t act like rock star or anything...

THP: HIM is maybe the most famous finnish rock band worldwide and fans from alla around the world have an HIM tattoo. Have you ever tattooed an Heartagram for example or something HIM related?

SA: Yes, of course I have done heartagrams, but not very many, maybe 10-15 in 6 years, so it´s not a lot after all. Most of them have been on Italian or German girls.

THP: What do you think about band tribute tattoos? Have you got some? Or are you planning on getting one?

SA: A lot of people get them, but I don´t have any. I haven´t gotten any because I have never listened to any band THAT much or for that long. So I guess I would regret getting them after a while, when my musical preferences change. If I would get one, it would probably be AC/DC or something else that never will change and start putting out crap albums or something.

THP: This is the last question. Given that we're an HIM site and that music's got a deep meaning into our life, how's music into yours?

SA: I love music and I listen to it all day, every day at work, but I still haven´t found a band that I like enough to get their logo tattooed on me. Music is definetly an important part of my life! We even have a HIM-cd at the studio, but I prefer Jussi Syren´s bluegrass versions of HIM songs.

THP: Well, nothing to add a part from thanking you for your time and answering to all of our questiions. So, we'll come and visit you guys on December...we're planning on getting a walk in tattoo during Helldone time :)
